Beware of the Friesian Horse Scam
I would like to address the growing issue of the Friesian Horse Scam that floats around online all too often. If you are anything like me, completely Friesian obsessed, then you’ve probably come across this a number of times. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who get too excited about a good deal and don’t do their research. We’ve all heard the saying “if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is” but for some reason when it comes to a Friesian Horse being offered at $1,000 …we tell ourselves “maybe this time it’s different”. Lets cover some basics here:
- Friesian Yearlings will usually be priced anywhere from $5,000-$12,000
- 2 year olds & up – with no training can be found for sale from $10,000 – $15,000
- 3 year olds & up are usually priced around $15,000 +
- Friesians who have Star status or have done well at the Keuring will likely be over $20,000
This is just a guideline but the point I am really trying to make is that you will not find a 4 yearold Star Gelding for under $5,000.. you will probably not even find a Friesian foal for under $5,000! Registered Friesians in good health for adoption do not exist – period! If you do find one, 99.999..% of the time it is a scam.
Key indicators to watch out for when shopping online for Friesian horses:
- If there is no location or phone number listed… it is a scam.
- If the Friesian horse for sale is only $1,000 and needs a home quickly.. it is a scam.
- 99.9% of the time, any purebred Friesian Horse being offered for under $5,000 is a scam.
The quoted text below was published on the FHANA website back in August, 2010
“Beware of Scams – August 25, 2010
There is currently a scam regarding Friesian owners Legacy Friesians and Witteveen Friesians that the membership should be aware. Golden Friesians which is in no way attached to FHANA is currently selling KFPS registered Friesians owned by both Legacy Friesians and Witteveen Friesian.
When you contact Golden Friesians they are asking for deposits to be made on the horse that is for sale. They are stealing all of this information from both Legacy and Witteveen Friesians websites. If you attempt to purchase a Friesian from this site, you will not receive the horse. They will take your money.
Legacy Friesian, Witteveen Friesians, and FHANA are not associated with Golden Friesians.”
Please do yourself a favor and do your research! Unless it is a reputable Friesian Breeder, never buy a Friesian horse sight unseen.
